Your Cover Letter...
...is your first opportunity to introduce yourself, present your qualifications, and show the search committee you are a potential candidate for the position.

Personalize your cover letter.

  • Take time to personalize your letter by showing that you are very interested in working in the position for which you are applying.
  • State the reason that you are interested in the position.
  • Address the cover letter to a specific individual whenever possible.

Cover letters should be clear and to the point.

  • Include the specific job title for which you are interested.
  • State two to three reasons why your experience would be beneficial to the job title.
  • Give a brief outline of career highlights.

Brag a bit about your skills and accomplishments on your present or most recent job that will impress the reader.

State your intentions and qualifications right up front. Do not expect a recruiter or personnel manager to wade through a mish-mash of information before understanding why you are sending your resume.

Emphasize your skills, talents, achievements and experiences.
    • Show how you would be a valuable addition to the organization.

Take action steps in your cover letter. State the fact that you are available for personal interviews. Give your home, work, cell phone numbers and E-mail address where you can be reached. Note that you will provide any additional information required.

A professionally written cover letter attached to your resume can open doors to your position on the corporate latter. A clean error-free presentation combined with strong phrasing and solid facts will encourage the reader to review the attached resume and contact you for an interview.

      Dear [Your recipients name]

It is tempting to telephone in response to your need for a General Manager since the majority of service transactions take place over the phone these days.

Instead, I enclose my resume as you requested, providing you with in-depth information on the 18 years I have spent in the food service industry. Throughout this time, I have successfully resolved customer claims relating to service policy, pricing and procedure. My responsibilities included all aspects of profitability, budgeting and marketing. I was highly involved in the implementation of the POS system. I trained all new managers in my district. I was also involved in the Grand opening of two restaurants.

More importantly, I have enhanced each restaurants' reputation by organizing and streamlining the production / service process so as to ensure maximum productive efficiency, and ensuring the ultimate dining experience for our patrons. Keeping existing customers satisfied and transforming first-time visitors into loyal, repeat clients was a constant goal.

Registered with the National Restaurant Association of Food Safety as a
      CERTIFIED FOOD SAFETY MANAGER/TRAINER.

I would appreciate the opportunity to do the same for your organization. I can supply references upon request and provide any additional information required. I will make myself available, at a specified date and time, for a personal interview, and will call you shortly so that you can experience my skills on a first-hand basis.

      Sincerely (your name)
